What is Person-Centred Counselling?

With a person-centred counsellor, you’ll be encouraged to bring your own issues to the session – the counselling is led by you and not directed by the counsellor. Many clients, with no prior knowledge of counselling, believe that the counsellor will sort their problems out for them. A person-centred counsellor will help you to explore your own issues, feelings, beliefs, behaviour, and worldview, so you can become more self-aware and achieve greater independence. More information can be found here on the BACP website.

How do I maximise my
counselling opportunity?

You’ll get the best results from your therapy if you’re open and honest with your therapist and say how you’re really feeling. Your relationship with your therapist is very important. If you’re to work effectively together, you should feel safe and able to take risks by disclosing and discussing sensitive issues. That includes being able to give them honest feedback on how you feel about your therapy and how you’re working together.

I don't like feeling vulnerable
and showing my feelings

Many clients find it difficult to express their vulnerability and are afraid to show their emotions at first. I understand. Your vulnerability is a precious part of you which you need to keep safe. As your therapy progresses and your relationship with your counsellor develops you may start to feel more safe and therefore more able to show these emotions.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no magic number of sessions when it comes to therapy. Some clients may come on a long-term basis and others may come for just a few sessions.

Counselling tends to be more useful if sessions are held on a regular basis but

the number and frequency of sessions will be your decision.

Will my sessions be confidential?

Our sessions together are strictly confidential. This will only be broken if I become concerned for you or someone else's safety. I am required by law to act on child protection issues, money laundering and terrorism issues. However, I will discuss any concerns as they arise. I am also required by law to attend supervision every month to ensure service and ethical standards are upheld. For development and learning, I may discuss aspects of my work with you with my supervisor; your details will be kept anonymous. My supervisor is also bound by confidentiality and will not discuss our work with anyone else.

How will you use my information?

Please read my privacy policy

What happens if I miss an appointment?

I would ask that you give me as much notice as possible if you need to reschedule or cancel and I understand that in some circumstances a last-minute cancellation is unavoidable. There is a £30 cancellation fee if you cancel within 24 hours of your booked session as I am unable to offer this at late notice to another client.

I am an individual member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy
